Does anyone Own or Work with Wide Format Printers?

topic posted Sun, February 24, 2008 - 9:44 PM by  Lonardo
I've been researching wide format printers for printing fine art, photos, banners, etc. I was hoping to find someone who works with or owns an HP z3100. I would LOVE to pick your brain if you'd let me.

I love my Epson 4800 pro! I wish I had room for the 9800, but I understand the HP z3100 gives it a run for the money. Check out this link:

Also... I have just started testing the Museo Silver Rag paper from Crane - I think I'm in love! No... really!!!
    • I work with the HP DesignJet 500
I work for a document and imaging company...
I get to use the printer on my work every once and a while. We use it mostly for a map printer kinda sad...
What do you need to know?
Paper is a huge thing with this...
Normal paper looks alright but still has some lines from printing and you need to make sure all your blacks are the same or you will see the shade difference in the image.
If you use a semi gloss paper it looks sooooo much better. And photo paper for this thing is like a few hundred dollars sooo.
      • I was wondering how the inks and media handle water. My guess is that water would bleed out the inks and ruin the print but I'm curious if they sell coatings out there to protect say a fine-art rag canvas print, or a large photo print.

Also I was wondering how well the HP Vivera Ink system holds on vinyl (banner) material in terms of durability.

Thanks so much for your input. I'm curious what you mean when you say "Normal paper looks alright but still has some lines from printing and you need to make sure all your blacks are the same or you will see the shade difference in the image."

What are the "lines" and what do you mean by making sure the blacks are the same? The printer I'm looking at uses a 12-ink system and 4 of those inks are neutrals, black and various shades of gray.

Thanks for the link and the suggestion on the Rag paper. I actually read through that site's evaluation in my research and I found it quite helpful. Does Crane send out sample swatches? I know HP sells many forms of media to use with this printer but I would love to hear more about other companies who sell products that are compatible.

What are you trying to print that you need to be waterproof?

Unfortunately, if you want your printer to remain archival, I don't think you can use waterproof inks and then go back to using archival inks on acid free media. Whenever I have wanted to print outdoor weather proof banners, I just send it out to somewhere like Kinkos. They do a fine job for less than it would cost me to do it myself.

Well its is not a lazer printer so it works the same as a pen, lines to make a solid color...
          Yes water runs colors...
Photo paper would be better but not water proof.
I dont know about banners I am unsure if it will do that...
Kinkos would be the cheapest way to do that water proof banner thing.

Well, I was hoping to be able to use this machine to print weather proof banners myself. Do you know what sort of ink/printing techniques places like Kinkos use to print weather proof banners?
While researching I read about UV-based inks used to print banners b/c of their resistance to sun damage.

If you were to print a piece of work vinyl using your Epson 4800, and should that piece encounter water, what would happen?
